There  are many things to do and see in the Riding Mountain  Biosphere Reserve (RMBR).Located in Southwestern Manitoba, the RMBR is home to twenty-nine thousand residents and encompasses twelve municipalities. Riding Mountain National Park is the core protected area.In addition to the vibrant local communities, the RMBR is known for its many species of plants and wildlife, its picturesque landscapes, and a myriad of diverse events from agricultural fairs to zoological presentations.

Erickson Community Gardens Project

In early July 2015 a seed was planted in  Erickson, Manitoba, and it would herald the planting of  many more. This seed grew to become ten Garden boxes located beside the Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve office on Second Street in the town of Erickson. It became known as the Erickson Community Garden.

With a little bit of soil, the workers who built the Garden boxes filled it with its components. With water, tools bought and utilized by the caretakers, and a community to tend to each box, a colorful range of vegetable seeds grew. The garden grew with sunshine, and the tender love and care from each person in the community who has doted over, cared for, and supported the plants. The seedling idea of ‘The Erickson Community Garden’ is that once the garden begins to flourish, it will eventually be harvested, traded among those who are tending to it, and shared with their friends and family.

Ten percent of proceeds will be given to a local food bank. This project shows the importance of keeping a community alive and supporting one another. If a Community Garden can thrive in Erickson, who knows what could happen if the concept branches out to other communities.
